8.38mm Laminated Glass

Standard Safety Glass for Doors, Light Railings & Skylights

8.38mm laminated glass (also known as 3+0.38+5 PVB laminated glass) is the most widely specified safety glazing for residential and light‑commercial applications where a balance between cost and performance is required. Two glass panes – one 3mm and one 5mm – are bonded together with a 0.38mm polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer under heat and pressure. When the glass breaks, the PVB holds the shards in place, preventing fall‑through injuries and providing moderate security against forced entry.

At ~20.5 kg/m², it is slightly heavier than 6.38mm but offers about 1.6× the bending stiffness, making it suitable for larger door panels, light balcony railings, and small skylights. It meets EN 14449, CE, ASTM C1172, and AS‑NZS 2208 standards.

8.38mm is the standard safety option – the most common thickness for general‑purpose safety glazing. It offers significantly better impact resistance than 6.38mm while remaining cost‑effective. For applications requiring even greater stiffness or hurricane resistance, step up to 10.38mm or 10.76mm.

Applications

Interior & Exterior Doors

8.38mm laminated glass is the preferred thickness for fully‑framed glass doors in residential and commercial settings. It provides adequate rigidity for door widths up to 1200mm and meets safety code requirements for glazing near walkways.

Light Balcony Railings & Guardrails

When the glass is supported by a frame (aluminum, stainless steel, or wood), 8.38mm laminated glass serves as a reliable infill panel. It prevents fall‑through even if the glass cracks, and its stiffness keeps deflection within acceptable limits for standard railing heights (up to 1100mm).

Skylights & Roof Glazing (Framed)

For small to medium‑sized framed skylights, 8.38mm laminated glass provides adequate overhead safety. The thicker 5mm pane on the outer side adds robustness against hail and debris.

Interior Partitions

Office dividers, conference room walls, and retail partitions benefit from the clean look and safety of 8.38mm laminated glass. The PVB interlayer also dampens noise, making it suitable for quiet zones.

Shop Fronts & Storefronts

For fully‑framed shop windows and display fronts, 8.38mm laminated glass offers a good balance of security, UV protection, and cost.

Greenhouse Glazing (Commercial)

Larger commercial greenhouses often specify 8.38mm laminated glass for improved thermal insulation and impact resistance compared to 6.38mm.

Processing Capabilities

All fabrication must be completed before lamination. We offer:

  • CNC Precision Cutting – tolerance ±0.1mm, rectangular and simple shapes
  • Edge Polishing – flat polished, arrissed, beveled, pencil edge, seamed
  • Drilling & Cut‑outs – round holes, slots, counter‑sunk holes (edge distance ≥ 16mm)
  • Custom Shapes – radius corners, trapezoids (subject to feasibility)
  • PVB Color Options – clear, milky white, bronze, grey, blue, green, or custom RAL
  • Further Composites – can be tempered before lamination (8.38mm tempered laminated), or combined with Low‑E coating, silk‑screen printing

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Can 8.38mm laminated glass be cut after lamination?

No. Once laminated, the glass cannot be cut, drilled, or edged. All processing must be done before lamination.

Q2: Is 8.38mm laminated glass strong enough for a balcony railing?

Yes, when fully framed and supported. For frameless balustrades, we recommend 10.38mm or thicker.

Q3: What is the weight of 8.38mm laminated glass?

Approximately 20.5 kg per square meter. A 1 m × 2 m panel weighs about 41 kg.

Q4: Can I get 8.38mm laminated glass with tempered glass?

Yes. You can specify “tempered laminated” – one or both panes are tempered before lamination for added strength.

Q5: What PVB colors are available?

Clear, milky white, bronze, grey, blue, green, and custom RAL colors on request.

Q6: Does 8.38mm laminated glass block UV?

Yes, it blocks over 99% of UV radiation, protecting interiors from fading.

Q7: What is the maximum size you can produce?

2550 mm × 7800 mm. Larger sizes may be possible – please inquire.

Q8: How does 8.38mm compare to 6.38mm?

8.38mm is stiffer (1.6×), heavier, and offers better impact resistance. It is the standard choice for doors and railings where 6.38mm may be too flexible.

Q9: Can 8.38mm laminated glass be used for overhead glazing?

Yes, for small to medium framed skylights. For larger spans or unframed installations, consider 10.38mm or thicker.

Q10: What certifications do you offer?

EN 14449, CE, ASTM C1172, AS‑NZS 2208. Additional certifications available on request.
