Textured shower glass — also called patterned shower glass — carries a relief pattern formed into the surface of the glass. Fluted and reeded are the two best-known textures, but they are two patterns within a much wider family.

What Is Textured Shower Glass?
Textured shower glass is tempered safety glass with a relief pattern formed into one face of the panel. The pattern is part of the glass itself — not printed on, not applied — so it cannot wear off, scratch away or delaminate in service.
Texture changes how the panel handles light. A flat clear panel is transparent in both directions and shows everything behind it. A textured surface refracts light as it passes through, which breaks up the view while still transmitting a high proportion of the daylight. That is the whole basis of its usefulness in a shower: privacy without darkness.
“Textured” and “patterned” are used to describe the same product, and both terms appear across the industry. The distinction that matters is not the name but the depth and geometry of the relief, because those determine how much privacy the glass gives, how it behaves when wet, and how easy it is to keep clean.
Why Texture Works in a Shower Enclosure
Texture is usually specified for a combination of practical and visual reasons rather than one alone.
- Privacy without losing the light. The relief refracts rather than blocks, so a bathroom stays bright — the main reason textured glass has replaced full frosting in most apartment and hotel specifications.
- Permanent, not applied. Because the pattern is formed in the glass, there is no coating to degrade under daily shower use, cleaning chemicals or heat.
- Hides the evidence of use. Textured surfaces disguise water spotting and fingerprints far better than flat clear glass, which is why they are specified so consistently in hospitality bathrooms.
- Depth and material character. Texture gives a large, flat, reflective surface some visual weight, which stops a glass enclosure from disappearing into an otherwise hard bathroom.
- Range structure without new tooling. The same enclosure system can be offered in clear and textured versions, giving a good–better–best ladder without redesigning the frame.
Texture Families
Showerspace organises textured glass into four families, each identified by a TX code. Within each family, individual patterns are defined by a drawing rather than by a name — because the same word means different things to different suppliers.
TX-G Geometric
Repeating angular or grid-based relief. Reads as structured and contemporary, and holds its pattern most clearly when lit from the front. Well suited to schemes built on tile grids and linear joinery.
TX-O Organic
Irregular, flowing relief that does not repeat visibly across the panel. The most forgiving family in daily use, as there is no regular pattern for water spotting to follow.
TX-L Linear
Straight-line relief at any pitch or angle. This is the family that contains fluted and reeded — the two best-known linear patterns, each with its own pattern series.
TX-S Surface
Fine-grain finishes that read as a sheen rather than a relief. The closest textured option to etched or frosted glass, for schemes that want softness without a visible pattern.

Linear Textures: Where Fluted and Reeded Fit
Most buyers arrive at textured glass already knowing fluted or reeded, because those are the two patterns the market talks about. Both are linear textures — a repeating straight-line relief — and both have their own pattern series with defined geometry.

Light, Privacy & Cleaning: What Texture Changes
Three things change when a shower panel stops being flat, and they are the three that most often cause a specification to be revised after sampling.
Light transmission
Texture refracts light rather than blocking it, so transmission stays high. Relief depth and glass colour are the two levers: deeper relief and tinted glass both reduce the light that passes through.
Privacy
Textured glass gives visual privacy, not opacity — it breaks up the outline behind the panel. Privacy rises with relief depth and with pattern density, and rises sharply when texture is combined with an etched face.
Cleaning
This is the trade-off buyers most often discover late. Deeper relief hides spotting better between cleans, but takes more effort when it is actually cleaned. Fine-grain TX-S surfaces sit at the other end of that curve.
Specifying notes.
- Pattern direction. Most textures are directional. Direction is stated on the drawing and held through cutting, drilling and installation; some patterns can be produced non-directional on request.
- Which face is textured. On single-sided texture the relief is normally placed on the outer (dry) face to simplify cleaning. Confirm per configuration.
- Wet behaviour. Water temporarily flattens the visual effect of a fine texture. Deeper relief holds its appearance better when the panel is wet — worth seeing in a sample before committing.

Glass Colour & Tint Options
Texture can be produced on the following glass types. Colour affects light transmission, how strongly the relief reads, and the perceived privacy level.
Clear
Standard float glass. Lets the relief do all the work and gives the highest light transmission.
Low-Iron
Reduced iron content for higher clarity and a cleaner edge — worth specifying on frameless panels where the edge stays visible.
Grey
A neutral tint that lowers transmission and deepens the shadow within the relief. Widely used in hotel bathroom schemes.
Bronze
A warmer tint for schemes built around brass, timber and stone. Warms the shadow in deeper relief patterns.

Thickness, Size & Relief Depth
Textured shower glass is supplied in 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm and 12 mm thicknesses.
Thickness is a function of the application, not a preference. It depends on panel dimensions, whether the panel is fixed or forms part of a moving door, the support method, the hardware specified, and the safety-glazing requirements of the destination market. We confirm the appropriate thickness against your drawings and target market rather than leaving it to be resolved on site.
Relief depth is the variable specific to this page. It is set independently of thickness, within the limits of the pattern and the glass being used, and it is what determines both the privacy level and the cleaning effort. Deeper relief needs a thicker base glass to temper predictably, so the two are specified together.

Processing & Fabrication
Textured shower glass is fabricated to drawing and supplied tempered as safety glass. Available processing:
Cutting
Cut to size and shape from project drawings, with pattern direction held to the specified axis.
Edge Polishing
Flat polish, bevel and other edge finishes. On frameless textured panels the edge stays visible, so edge quality is part of the design.
Drilling
CNC-drilled holes for hinges, clamps, brackets and handles, positioned to drawing and clear of the relief.
Notches
CNC notches and cut-outs for pivots, channels, stabiliser bars and wall connections.
Tempering
Supplied tempered as safety glass. Requirements for the destination market are agreed before production.
Etching & Printing
Acid etching can be combined with texture on the opposite face. Digital ceramic printing is feasible on shallower reliefs; deeper patterns limit fine detail, so artwork is reviewed before sampling.

Hardware Pairings
A textured surface already carries visual activity, so the general rule is to keep the metal quieter than the glass.
Textured + Brushed Nickel
The safest match across the whole TX range. Satin metal against a textured surface keeps the enclosure calm and is the usual choice for standards repeated across many hotel rooms.
Textured + Matte Black
High contrast, and the best way to make geometric TX-G patterns read sharply. Use with restraint on organic patterns, where the contrast tends to fight the irregular relief.
Textured + Brushed Brass
Warm metal against a textured surface, suited to schemes with timber, stone and bronze-tinted glass. Works best with deeper relief, where the shadow has something to hold.

Which Texture Should You Specify?
The decision usually comes down to three questions, and answering them in this order avoids most re-specification.
- How much privacy does the application need? Medium coverage almost always means a linear texture — fluted for a more architectural stripe, reeded for a more even diffusion. High coverage points to a deep relief combined with an etched face, or to frosted glass.
- How much cleaning effort is acceptable? In high-turnover hospitality bathrooms, specify the shallowest relief that meets the privacy requirement. Deeper relief hides spotting better between cleans but takes longer to clean properly.
- Should the texture be a feature or a background? Geometric and deep linear patterns are features. Organic and fine-grain surface textures sit quietly behind bold tile or stone.
