What Is Fluted Shower Glass?
Fluted shower glass is tempered safety glass with a repeating series of vertical grooves formed into one face of the panel. The grooves are shallow enough to keep the glass practical to clean, but regular enough to interrupt a direct line of sight. That combination is what gives fluted glass its characteristic balance of light transmission and privacy.
It behaves differently from frosted glass. Frosted glass diffuses light by scattering it, which softens the view in both directions and noticeably reduces clarity. Fluted glass keeps light directional: a fluted panel in a shower enclosure still carries daylight deep into the bathroom, while the vertical rhythm of the texture reads as a deliberate architectural detail rather than a privacy treatment applied after the fact.
Fluted glass is supplied tempered for shower use and can be produced in clear, low-iron, grey and bronze glass, in the thicknesses and panel sizes defined by your enclosure configuration and project drawings.
Why Use Fluted Glass in a Shower?
For distributors, shower enclosure manufacturers and bathroom brands, fluted glass solves a commercial problem as much as a design one: it gives a product line a recognisable identity without moving into a completely different manufacturing process.
- Differentiation without a new product family. The same enclosure system can be offered in clear and fluted versions, giving the range a good-better-best structure with minimal additional tooling.
- Privacy that does not darken the room. Particularly valuable in apartment and hotel bathrooms, where enclosures often sit close to the room and full frosting would make the space feel closed in.
- Forgiving in daily use. Textured glass disguises water spotting and fingerprints better than a flat clear panel, which matters in high-turnover hospitality environments.
- Works with current interior trends. Vertical ribbing pairs naturally with fluted timber, reeded cabinetry and ribbed tile, so the enclosure reads as part of the room rather than an isolated element.
- Compatible with standard systems. Fluted glass can be specified into frameless, semi-frameless and framed configurations using the same drilling, notching and hardware preparation as flat glass.
Design & Privacy: How Fluted Glass Performs
Four variables decide whether a fluted panel works in a given shower. They are the first things a specifier should fix, and the first things we confirm with you before sampling.
Light Transmission
The groove profile bends light rather than blocking it, so a fluted enclosure keeps a bathroom bright. Glass colour has the largest effect here: low-iron and clear carry the most light, grey and bronze reduce it.
Privacy
Fluted glass provides visual privacy, not opacity. It breaks up the outline of a person behind the panel. Privacy increases with groove density, with tinted glass, and when fluted texture is combined with an etched or frosted finish.
Texture
Groove pitch, depth and profile geometry determine the shadow line and how the surface reads at distance: subtle and satin-like from across the room, clearly three-dimensional up close.
Visual Effect
Vertical flutes add height and rhythm to a shower space and introduce a directional grain that can be aligned with tile, joinery and door hardware.
Specifying notes.
- Texture direction. Vertical flutes are standard; horizontal flutes can be produced on request. Direction is stated on the drawing.
- Which face is textured. On single-sided fluted glass the texture is normally placed on the outer (dry) face for easier cleaning. Confirm the arrangement per configuration.
- Judge privacy with a sample, not a photo. Groove depth and lighting change the result considerably. We recommend evaluating a physical panel under your own bathroom lighting before committing to a pattern.

Fluted Glass Pattern Collection
Our fluted shower glass range is organised by pattern ID. Each ID corresponds to a defined groove profile, so a specification refers to a physical geometry rather than to a word whose meaning varies between suppliers. FL-01 Fine Flute
Narrow, closely spaced ribs. Reads almost as a satin stripe from a distance, with the texture only resolving up close. Suitable where a subtle surface is wanted rather than a statement.
FL-02 Standard Flute
Medium-pitch ribs with a clearly defined shadow line. The most frequently specified profile for frameless shower doors and fixed panels, and a sensible starting point for a new collection.
FL-03 Wide Flute
Broader ribs with a more pronounced profile and stronger light-and-shadow contrast. Used where the enclosure is intended to be the visual feature of the bathroom.
FL-04 Fluted & Frosted
Fluted texture combined with an acid-etched surface on the opposite face. Keeps the fluted geometry while raising the privacy level for shared bathrooms and hospitality applications.

Glass Options
Fluted texture can be produced on the following glass types. Colour selection affects both light transmission and the perceived privacy level of the finished panel.
Clear
Standard float glass with the fluted profile. The neutral base option for most shower enclosure ranges.
Low-Iron
Reduced iron content for higher clarity and a cleaner edge colour. Specified for premium frameless enclosures where the glass edge is visible.
Grey
A neutral grey tint that lowers light transmission and adds depth. Commonly paired with matte black and stainless hardware.
Bronze
A warmer tint for bathroom schemes built around brass, timber and stone finishes.

Thickness & Size
Fluted shower glass is supplied in 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm and 12 mm thicknesses.
Which thickness is appropriate is not a free choice. It depends on panel dimensions, whether the panel is fixed or forms part of a moving door, the support method, the hardware specified, and the safety-glazing requirements of the destination market. Not every thickness suits every enclosure configuration, and we will confirm the appropriate thickness against your drawings and target market rather than leaving it to be resolved on site.

Glass Processing
Fluted shower glass is fabricated to drawing. Available processing includes:
Cutting
Cut to size and shape from project drawings, including shaped and angled panels.
Edge Polishing
Flat polished, beveled and other edge finishes. Edge quality matters most on frameless panels, where the edge stays visible.
Drilling
CNC-drilled holes for hinges, clamps, brackets and handles, positioned to drawing.
Notches
CNC notches and cut-outs for pivots, channels, stabiliser bars and wall connections.
Tempering
Shower glass is supplied tempered as safety glass. Requirements for the destination market are agreed before production.
Printing
Digital ceramic printing can be combined with fluted glass. Artwork is normally applied to the flat face; feasibility depends on groove depth and design and is confirmed before sampling.

Hardware Pairings
Finishes change how the same fluted panel reads. These three pairings cover most specification work; other finishes can be matched to your existing hardware range.
Fluted + Matte Black
The highest-contrast pairing. The black profile sharpens the groove shadow line and reads as contemporary and graphic. Frequently specified with grey-tinted fluted glass.
Fluted + Brushed Brass
Warm metal against a textured surface, suited to bathroom schemes with timber, stone and bronze-tinted glass. The brushed finish avoids competing with the texture for attention.
Fluted + Stainless
The neutral option. Polished or brushed stainless keeps the glass itself as the feature and is the safest choice for hospitality standards that must be repeated across many rooms.

Fluted or Reeded: Which Do You Need?
“Fluted” and “reeded” are used almost interchangeably across the market, and some suppliers treat them as the same visual product. Rather than relying on the words, Showerspace defines each pattern by pattern ID and groove profile: the FL series on this page, and the RD series on our reeded shower glass page, refer to different groove geometries.
If you are matching an existing panel or a competitor’s product, the reliable route is a physical sample or a profile drawing. Send either and we will identify the closest pattern ID, or develop a custom profile for an OEM programme.
