Shower Enclosures Guides
The glass is the most durable part of a shower enclosure. The fittings, seals and tracks are the vulnerable ones — which is the opposite of what most cleaning advice assumes.
This page is not about how to clean any particular glass — each glass type has its own page for that, and the care instructions differ. It covers what is true across every type: why the marks people complain about are usually not dirt, the short list of things that cause permanent damage, why the product that is safe on glass can wreck the fittings, and which widely repeated cleaning advice is myth. It is written for the day the enclosure is already installed.
What Permanently Damages GlassLimescale Is Not Dirt
Before reaching for a stronger product, it helps to know which of three things is on the glass. They look similar and behave completely differently.

The first two are reversible. The third is not, and no amount of further cleaning improves it — which is why the instinct to escalate to something stronger is the one that does the harm.
A quick way to tell. Wet the panel. Marks that disappear when wet and return when dry are surface deposits. Anything still visible through a wet panel is in the glass itself.
This is the single most useful thing on this page, because it changes what you do about it.
Soap scum is residue from soaps and body products. It is softened with a mild alkaline cleaner and wiped away. Limescale is mineral deposit left behind when hard water evaporates — calcium and magnesium carbonates. It is not film sitting on the surface; it is what remains after the water leaves.
Two consequences follow, and both run against instinct:
In hard-water areas this is not a cleaning problem at all, it is a water-management problem. The effective intervention is removing the water before it dries, not finding something stronger to remove it afterwards.
Where it concentrates. The bottom of the panel, the area behind the door sweep, anything in the spray path of the shower head, and the horizontal surfaces of fittings. Those are the places to look at if you want to judge how a scheme will age.
The list is shorter than most people expect, and every item on it is irreversible. Tempered glass is a hard, chemically resistant material — it tolerates ordinary bathroom cleaning products without complaint. These are the exceptions.
Cream cleansers, scouring powders, abrasive sponges, the green side of a kitchen sponge, and — the common one — "paste" remedies made from bicarbonate of soda. All of them work by abrading. On glass that leaves fine scratches, and those scratches do not come out.
The damage is worse than it first appears, because scratched glass holds water more readily than smooth glass. The panel then spots faster than it did before, and the conclusion people draw is that it needs cleaning more often.
Razor blades and glass scrapers are standard on windows and cooktops, and they are the most common cause of permanent damage to shower glass that we hear about. The reason is that window glass is flat and shower glass often is not — and even on flat glass, a blade picks up a single hard particle and drags it the length of the panel.
The rule: a scraper is acceptable on flat, smooth, untreated glass and nowhere else. Not on textured or patterned glass, where the blade only rides the high points. Not on etched surfaces, where it removes the treatment in a stripe. Not over printed areas. Not on back painted panels, where the coating is on the reverse and a scratched front face cannot be polished out.
This is the one item on the list that is genuinely chemical rather than mechanical, and it is the one people do not expect, because these products are not sold as glass cleaners. Some tile cleaners, grout removers, rust removers and stone-care products contain hydrofluoric acid or fluoride salts. They are effective on mineral deposits precisely because they dissolve silica — which is what glass is made of.
Used on shower glass they etch the surface permanently, leaving a dull mark in the shape of the wipe. There is no repair.
The practical rule: if a product is intended for removing grout haze, rust or stone deposits, check whether it is stated as safe for glass before it goes anywhere near the enclosure. If the label does not say, do not use it.
Back painted panels carry their coating on the reverse face, protected by the glass — which is why the colour does not wear off in service. But the edges and any drilled holes expose that construction, and aggressive solvents applied there can attack the coating from the side. Around fitting holes and cut-outs, that is a real failure path.
Not a cleaning issue, but it belongs on this list because it is the most common way a panel is lost. The face of a tempered panel is tough; the edge is the vulnerable part. A knock from a bottle, a tap from a tool during other trades' work, or a chip that went unnoticed at installation can fail later — and the panel is made to order, so replacement is a new panel, not a repair. This is the part that most cleaning advice gets backwards, and it is where most avoidable damage actually occurs.
Glass is the most chemically durable component in the enclosure. The metal is not. A cleaner that leaves glass untouched can strip, dull or pit a finish — and finish damage is not covered by any reasonable warranty, because it is caused by what was put on it.

Which finishes show it most. Polished chrome shows water spotting and fingerprints readily; brushed finishes conceal the evidence of daily use far better; matt black tends to show dried soap film. None of that is a defect and none of it is a reason to escalate to a stronger product — see hardware finishes for how each finish behaves in service.
The working method. Clean the glass with the door closed and the fittings protected, or clean the fittings separately with a cloth and mild detergent rather than by spraying the whole assembly. Spraying a cleaner over the entire enclosure, metal included, is the single most common cause of avoidable finish damage.
Two components in a sliding or folding enclosure determine how long it lasts, and both are usually ignored because they are not visible.
A track collects everything: water, soap, hair, and the grit that comes in on feet. Left alone it becomes abrasive, and the rollers run through it. Keeping the track clear is the highest-value maintenance task on a sliding enclosure, and it takes seconds.
One specification note that becomes obvious in service: whatever the track cannot be reached, will not be cleaned. If the design leaves a section of track behind a fixed panel or under a return, it will accumulate, and nobody will clear it. That is worth raising at design stage — see hardware.
Rollers are wear items. They are not expected to last the life of the enclosure, and the site does not publish a service life for them because the honest answer depends on water, usage and whether the track was ever cleaned. The question worth asking at specification is a different one: can the roller be replaced without dismantling the whole enclosure? That is decided when the system is chosen and cannot be changed afterwards — see hardware.
Seals and sweeps stiffen and crack with age, and bleach accelerates it. They are the cheapest thing in the assembly and the first thing worth replacing when an enclosure starts leaking at the bottom.
It worked when newsprint was ink on soft paper. Modern print is different, and the paper itself is mildly abrasive when rubbed dry. A clean squeegee does the same job better.
It is a mild abrasive, which is exactly why it appears to work on stains. On glass, the marks it removes come back faster afterwards because the surface is now holding water.
Escalation is the mechanism of damage. Most marks that resist ordinary cleaning are mineral deposits, and the answer is a product that dissolves minerals — used as directed — not a more aggressive one.
Occasionally, yes — and it is worth checking. But the majority of staining reported as a defect is either mineral deposit or cleaning damage, and both are visible in a photograph. Send one before assuming.

For tinted and back painted glass the consideration is instead about edges and reverse faces, as set out above.
Worth saying plainly, because it saves a wasted afternoon.
Scratches, etching from fluoride products, blade marks and chips are permanent. No product removes them. Polishing glass is not a domestic operation, and on tempered glass it is not an option at all — polishing removes material, and the panel cannot be re-tempered.
So the decision is a practical one: live with it, or replace the panel.
If it comes to replacement, three things are worth knowing before the enquiry:
Where the damage is to a laminated panel, one further point applies: the exposed edge is the part to inspect, because that is where moisture-related change shows first. See laminated shower glass.
None of this is demanding, and none of it needs a specialist product. It is mostly about water.
One thing worth saying about expectations. In a hard-water area, a shower enclosure that is used daily will show spotting. That is the water, not the glass, and it is not something a specification can prevent. What a specification can do is choose a surface that hides it — which is why texture is specified so consistently in high-turnover hospitality bathrooms, and why that trade-off is set out on each glass page.
